whoops forgot #19.

I am already a member of facebook. I am also a member of twitter. I never get on it though. I created it for this class. Maybe Ill use it in the future. I think teacher pop and ning are pretty cool sites for teachers. It allows teachers to form a social community were they can collaberate or just talk. I think it is very interesting that the site must approve a video or member before it allows it to be posted. I will probably use teacher pop in the future because it is most like facebook.

Thing#23

http://schoollibrarylearning2.csla.net/2007/02/23-things_27.html
From this site and many others, I now know that 23 things has been around awhile and wasnt made up just for this class, but it is a blogg page the was created to help all teacher become familiar with Web 2.0 to benefit them and their students.

Know that I know about the creative commons license, I will know what I can use for my classroom. This will allow me to give credit to the source that deserves it. I will also be able to show my students what they can and cannot use for a credited source. Creative commons has also taught me not to copy and paste so carelessly so that I dont take credit off of someones work that didnt initially give permission to the public.

The end is near. last part of 23 things

This project has not been anything like I thought. At first, I was afraid it would be a lot of time consuming projects that I would only use for this class and never use again, but many of the programs that I used are great and easy to use. Some of my favorites were the homepage setup, livefolder, and animoto. These are very simple to set up and I can see using them the most. This has helped my learning because it has taught me more about technology programs. I know can use these programs in my classroom and reap the benefits of educational technology.

Thing #22

http://www.livebinders.com/play/play_or_edit?id=368678
<div style="width:75px; height:78px; background-image:url(http://www.livebinders.com/images/binder_icon_private.gif); border:0px; margin-top:4px; background-repeat: no-repeat"> <a href="http://www.livebinders.com/play/play_or_edit?id=368678"> <img src="http://open.thumbshots.org/image.pxf?url=http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/collection/standardized-test-preparation" style="width:60px; height:60px; border:0px; padding:0px;margin:11px 0px 0px 13px;" /> </a> </div> <div><a href="http://www.livebinders.com/play/play_or_edit?id=368678">testing</a><br /></div> \

I guess this is how I am supposed to post my live binder to my blogg. The names of the three binders I created were effective classroom management, fun and educational learning, and preparing students for test. Livebinder is really helpful. If I find a website that I think is interesting I can save it to my binder instead filling up my favorites list. I can also add as many websites to a folder as I want. This makes me feel organized. This is good for students because a teacher can place all the websites of a topic in a folder and make it public for students to read. This can help on addition school help and providing sites for projects.

thing #21

This website is amazing. If I had some good pictures to upload I would have, but I just used the pictures from the sites. All you have to do is pick the pictures and the music, and the website does the rest for you. You dont even have to be on the site for it to make it. The video is really good too. If I would have created it would have looked like a cheap slideshow presentation. This can be used to make presentations in class and for special events.

Thing #20

Youtube is a great website. I wish I had more free time to use it. You can gain so much knowledge and learn to physically do things with youtube. I use you tube to listen to music, learn how to play music, I used it to carve a decoy duck, I used it you work out, I use it to humor myself, and best of all I use it to kill time. One of the most beneficial things about youtube is you can actually use it for school. If I dont know how to do a math problem or dont know what button to click on powerpoint, youtube usually always has a video to help me. This is a great site for visual learners.

Thing # 18

Social networking is important to know because it is the new way of communication these days. Teachers can easily connect with students in blogs to post assignments, homework, and additional help. One main reason teachers need to be aware of social networking is because some features like facebook allows people to view in on you personal life, so be careful what you post. I like facebook alot more that twitter. The only reason I have a twitter is because I had to create one for this class. Facebook is good for looking up old friends and it is also good for stalking people. haha just kidding. Facebook has more useful features. I think it is easier to use and you can connect with friends and play online games through facebook.

Thing# 17

Delicious is a very useful site. Bookmarking is very convenient is the classroom. book marking allow you to save time by already having your websites saved to the internet. It is also great that you can create a save on delicious button on your tool bar. The is great for class rooms because it allows you to share your bookmarks with your students which is helpful for the students.

Thing #16

I just set up my home page and I think this great. I will definitely keep this as my home page. I already type in various web sites to veiw what is going on in music, sports, news, and entertainment, and google has posted stories that covers all these topics. I chose google because most of the time google is simple and reliable. Google pulled through for me again. It also shows a weekly weather report. Remeber the milk was a good tool. It allowed me to create a calender and put in a to do list. It also allows you to share you tasks with other people. The home page is very usefull and if you dont have one you should get one.

thing #15

I use wiki all the time. So when I saw that we were going to get to see how to be able to edit someone elses work I was excited to learn how. I didnt change anybodys blogs they put it, but I inserted a pic of a shark. That was the only thing I could think to put on the page. Even though I only really use wiki for my own reading pleasure, I see how its editing feature can be useful. People can add in links to other web sources to give additional info and people can place input on a page that maybe helpful and true, but look out for the trouble makers.

thing 14

Here is a flow chart I created from gliffy. It was very simple to create this chart. As soon as I logged in, I jumped right into starting the flow chart of my family. The only bad thing is that this may look a little old fashion, but I can see how educators can use this to create web diagrams, Ven diagrams, and all sorts of activities for students to partake in. I know I could have used this for one of my high school classes and will probably use this for my future classes.

I created a chart on mind map bubbl.us, but I could not get it to pop up on my blogg. I worked on it for about 30 min. trying to get it to pop up until I viewed other peoples bloggs and seen they didnt have their charts up. So I feel like I just wasted half an hour. Bubbl.us is very simple and is more current and up to date looking than gliffy. I would suggest using bubbl.us for projects if you can figure out how to get the image off of your account.

thing 13

I really like the Zoho writer. It was very simple and free. On my computer at home I do not have microsoft word, and I can use this web site to create my documents. I found that Zoho was similar to microsoft, but Zoho was easier to use. It also lets you save it to links and allows others to leave comments on it.

When I logged into google doc. the set up had me lost. It was very confusing and frustating to figure out. Maybe it was just me though. I learned that you can save your work to this site instead of saving it to a jumpdrive or computer so that makes very useful. I learned that it is a good site to share group work as well.
 I prefer Zoho.

thing #12

I love google. I had no idea google had these tools. I already use google all the time. Now this gives me a reason to use it even more. I used google calender. I find this very helpful because remembering what is coming up can slip your mind. I just know remembered that I have a quiz that I have to study for tomorrow, but the calender is very helpful. Teachers can put memo on the calender like if there is a practice fire drill that day, pizza party, or faculty meeting.
I also used google translater. This one I though to be very cool. You can use this to learn to speak a different language if you wanted to. This could be used to help students taking a spanish class to get some additional aid.

Thing #11

When I first looked at this, I had no idea what I was supposed to do, but then I looked at it again and figured out what I was supposed to do. Google was the easiest feed and search tool. I mean I use google all the time. The other day when I was looking for bloggs to follow, I had no idea where to  start. The google blogg search tool was very helpful and easy. I checked the topix link. This isnt the first time I have used topics. I used to get on there and read about all of the things that were going on back where I live. The feeds on topix though were mainly gossip related things when I would type in my zip, but it was still intertaining.

Thing #10

I just viewed the RSS. I didnt even realize I already had a google reader account. Google reader is really helpful. I hate having to open up 4 different page at the same time. I didn't even know how to switch back from my blogg back to the 23 things page until today. I guess that shows how good I am with computers.

I could definitely see how this could be used for educational purposes. Teachers could find a subject matter that they are going over and follow bloggs that cover the material. They could then let the students veiw the bloggs and form their own opinion about a subject, and if the student want to, they can continue their research after the assignment is over. Teachers could also learn additional facts by veiwing all these bloggs that are all together in google reader.

Thing 9

I played around with the different web sites listed on thing 9. I worked on one of the links for a little while but couldnt figure out how to save it to my blogg. I think it was considered a video because it had pictures that moved in it. I used http://www.imagechef.com/ic/word_mosaic/ to make the smiley face pic. I is supposed to say " I love cheese". I also wrote cheesey in there because it wasnt making a complete face. For the next picture I used http://www.text2logo.com/. I could think of anything to write. I was going to write that the logo style reminded me of a frog, but it wouldnt fit in the box.

I could definitely she how this can be used for a library of class. It could add some color and excitement. It also can be used for someone to express their personality because there are so many things available to express it through theses sites.

thing# 8

I played around with the pic tools and thought them to be really cool. I can definitely see how you can use these tools in education. For instance, there is one tool that allow you to group pictures together. I had to do this once for a book project. I collected a bunch of pictures that showed topics in the book. This program would have helped. There was also one where you used pictures to spell something. I think it would be really cool if for a class you used different series of pictures to spell out  words or  phrases like you are cracking a code. The puzzle one could be used for elementary classes. Make sure they can handle scissors, and they can create their own puzzle.

thing #7

As I told you in my last blog, I surf google images and look at pictures of sharks occasionally. The flicker website was really interesting and neat. I just had trouble getting the picture from there to upload to here, so I had to compromise and choose this picture instead of the one I really wanted. The web address for this pic is http://www.flickr.com/photos/2k8/3755623666/ . The photographer listed his name as wanna-have-a-look-what-ive-got ;) . I didnt look at any more of his pictures other than this one.

Thing#6

I just viewed that top hundred awards for web 2.0. I think that the link to all the the top 100 was pretty cool. I have never even heard of some of the sites that got in the top 100. I viewed one and though it to be pretty neat. It  is called SCOUR http://www.scour.com/. This is a search engine that combines google, yahoo, and MSN.  Since I use these search engines most of the time I'm on the internet, except yahoo, I thought this was a pretty good site. I mean here is an example of how nerdy I am. I get on google images and type in the search box " scary pictures of great white sharks." This website will probably add to the nerdiness because it also has the image button along with videos. I guess most search engines have this but who cares. The links that scour pulls up seems to be less junk filled.

Thing#5

For this blogg it is about web 2.0. What is web 2.0 you ask. Well I watched one of the links and I think that it is Internet that connects you socially. This is made possible through facebook, twitter, wiki, youtube, and bloggs. All of these websites link people together and allow them to insert their input or comment on a subject matter. Before the internet was mainly a source to find information, now the internet is filled with all kinds of social networking.

Web 2.0 is the future of education because with the web, teachers can connect to their students better than ever. Teachers can have bloggs that have class assignments, extra homework, and videos or links to give additional info.
One way web 2.0 has benefited me is that I dont have to by text books for some classes because all of the infor that I need for the class is available through email, powerpoints, and D2L. So, 2.0 saves alot of money. the end

Thing# 4

Commenting on other people's blogs gives bloggers a sense of community and interaction because it shows evidence that someone is actually taking the time to read their stuff. I mean isnt the point of creating a blogg so that other people read it. That and if you get enough followers you can get money off of it, so follow me. But it is also important to comment because it can encourage the blogger themselves. I mean if no one leaves a comment it looks like no one cares, and if no one cares, then why would the blogger strive to give the people what they want.

Two points that I found interesting in the extra blogg reading was the blogg that said to right a meaning comments more that one word. I mean seriously, it's kinda of annoying when you leave a long thought out post and the only comment is "yeah" "good" or "cool". Thats like getting a card with Hallmark's message and a signature instead of an actually message from a person.

Another thing I read was a list of ways to get more comments. It had good tips like be polite. And who doesnt like reading comments.

I decided to read and comment on Ashton Kearns's blogg because we sit next to each other in class and she helps me with some of the task we due in class. I commented on a picture she posted because she posted a shark picture like me. I told her she was stealing my ideas, and she aggreed and said I was the best blogger ever. ( the last part wasn't true).

I decided to read and comment on Rebeca Black's blogg because we had Education Psycology together. I dont really know her but I remembered her name because it is the same as that girl who sings the Friday Song. I wrote on her wall that our experiences with using the internet for school has been very similiar. Hardly using it in high school and now using it all the time.

I decided to read and comment on Derek Carol's blogg because we play football together, and we help each other on our 23 things if we need help. I commented on his blog that he could comment on mine. I ask why his avatar looking sad.

I decided to read and comment on Anita Taylor's blogg because we had Education 1020 together, and we were partners for one of our class presentations. I commented on Anita's post about search engines. I told her that I used ask.com before I ever heard of google.

I decided to read and comment on Kim Messer's blogg because she has good bloggs and I frequently read her bloggs to know if I am on the write track with my 23 things. I thanked Kim for saying that she liked my blog and complemented her good blogging skills.

I decided to read and comment on Christina Ray's blogg because I read her bloggs and they were very good. I commented to Christina that I am a google addict also, because she said she uses it all the time.

I decided to read and comment on Rachel Jone's blogg because I needed one more blogg to comment on and her name was one of the first ones I saw to the right. So, congradulations. haha. I commented on Rachel's flicker picture. She had a picture of an event that I heard about from a friend.

Thing #3

Bloggs can be used in many ways for education. Teachers can put lesson plans that their class enjoyed on the blog. They can also put lessons that kids didnt enjoy. Teachers can post homework schedules and assignments for their students. Teachers can also post extra credit or links to websites for extra work.
I don't know if posting dailey experiences of things that happened in your class is a good idea, but I could see how it would be interesting.

Thing #2

Setting up the blog wasn't too hard, but it took me a week to realize that my blog wasn't registered to the class. I still don't know if I am posting correctly. I guess I will know if this post pops up on the 23 things list. My blogger name is jmarshallsexton. Marshall is my middle name. I tried to change my name to that when i was in high school, but it never caught on. Creating the avatar was easy. I guess it looks like me if I was a cartoon. I just added simple stuff to my avatar because you have to buy the better stuff I think. My avatar didn't post on my first blog, so hopefully it posts on this one. I have noticed that my blog page looks really simple compared to everyone else. That is because I have no idea how to change it. I'll try to work on it some more.

Thing #1

I just set up my blogg and went through the 7 1/2 habit for learning tutorial so hopefully this is correct.
The easiest thing of the seven for me was the play part because who doesnt know how to play. The hardest for me was using technology for my advantage. That is the hardest i believe because most of the time when it comes to technology as soon as it gets complicated I get frustrated and give up, unless I really need to use.
